Laundry Room Cabinetry Design: A South African Homeowner's Guide
How to design a functional, beautiful laundry room with custom-built cabinetry

A laundry room is a machine room. Design it around the workflow — sort, wash, dry, fold, store — and it will save you time every single day.
01Plan the workflow
Sorting hampers near the door, machines in the middle, and a folding surface next to the dryer. If you can, put the folding counter opposite the machines rather than beside them so two people can work at once.
02Stacking and ventilation
Stacked machines free a full cabinet bay but need a stacking kit and a ventilated housing. Condensing dryers need airflow; vented dryers need a duct route planned before cabinetry is built.
03Surfaces and details
Use a wipe-clean worktop, a deep utility sink, and a drying rail over the sink. Broom cupboards should be at least 350mm deep to take a real upright vacuum.
- Pull-out sorting hampers, two or three bays
- Drop-down drying rail or pull-out rack
- Ventilated appliance tower
- Deep utility sink with a hose-friendly tap
The takeaway
Design the laundry as a workflow, not as leftover cupboards. It is the highest-return small room in the house.
