Cabinet Hardware: Hinges, Runners and Handles Worth Paying For
Why hardware is the part of your kitchen you touch most and notice least
5 min read · Cupboards2Cabinets design team
You will open a kitchen drawer perhaps forty thousand times. Hardware is the component where a small price difference produces the biggest difference in daily experience.
01Hinges
Clip-on soft-close hinges from an established brand carry a lifetime cycle rating and can be adjusted in three planes. Generic hinges lose their damping within a few years and often cannot be adjusted enough to correct a dropped door.
02Runners
Full-extension undermount runners let you reach the back of a deep drawer, carry 30–50kg, and hide the mechanism. Side-mounted roller runners cost less, sag under load, and only extend about three quarters of the way.
03Handles and finishes
Brushed brass, matte black and satin nickel all age differently. Unlacquered brass develops a patina — beautiful if you want it, a complaint if you did not expect it.
- Confirm soft-close on every door and drawer, not a sample
- Ask for the hinge and runner brand in writing
- Handle length should relate to door height — roughly one third
The takeaway
If your budget is tight, downgrade the door finish before you downgrade the hardware.
