Kitchen Lighting Design: Layers, Temperature and Placement
How to light a kitchen so it works at 7am and still feels warm at 9pm
5 min read · Cupboards2Cabinets design team
Most South African kitchens are lit by a single ceiling fitting behind the person standing at the counter — which means they cook in their own shadow. Layered lighting fixes it.
01Three layers
Ambient light for the room, task light for the working surfaces, and accent light for shelving, glass cabinets and the island.
- Ambient: recessed downlights on a dimmer, positioned over walkways
- Task: continuous LED channel under wall units
- Accent: internal cabinet LED and island pendants
02Colour temperature
3000K reads warm and flattering for open-plan spaces; 4000K is crisper for detailed prep. Mixing temperatures within one sightline is the most common mistake — pick one and keep the whole room consistent.
03Plan it before manufacture
LED channels, driver locations and switch positions all affect cabinetry construction. Retrofitting a driver into a finished cabinet means cutting a hole where you did not want one.
The takeaway
Light the surfaces, not the ceiling — and decide on the lighting plan before the cabinetry drawings are signed off.
