DIY Cabinet Painting & Refinishing: Can You Paint Your Own Kitchen Cabinets?
An honest assessment of what's achievable at home vs what requires a professional spray booth

You can get a good result painting cabinets at home. You cannot get a factory result. Knowing the difference before you start saves a great deal of disappointment.
01What determines the outcome
Preparation, not paint. Degrease thoroughly, sand to a uniform matte key, and apply a proper adhesion primer. Most peeling failures are grease that was never removed.
- Degrease with sugar soap, then rinse
- Sand with 180–240 grit, dust off completely
- Adhesion primer suited to melamine or wrap
- Two thin topcoats of a hard-wearing enamel or 2K acrylic
02Brush, roller or spray
A fine foam roller with a light brush tip-off gives a respectable finish. An HVLP sprayer gives a much better one but demands masking, ventilation and practice on offcuts.
03When to call a professional
Vinyl-wrapped doors that have already lifted, high-gloss finishes, and any situation where you need a genuinely seamless colour match should go to a spray shop. Removing doors and having them sprayed off-site is often cheaper than a full replacement.
The takeaway
Painting cabinets is 80% preparation. Give it the time and the result will surprise you; skip it and the paint will peel within a year.
