How to Build a DIY Kitchen Island in South Africa

Design decisions, materials, and step-by-step construction for a freestanding or fixed island

A storage-only island is a genuinely realistic weekend project. Add plumbing or a hob and it becomes a job for trades.

01Design and clearances

Confirm 900mm of walkway on all sides and decide on the worktop before you build the base, because the base dimensions depend on the overhang you want.

02Building the base

Build two or three carcasses rather than one long box — they are easier to move, square and level. Join them, then wrap the exposed sides and back in a finished panel so the island reads as one piece.

  • Carcass height 870mm plus a 30mm top gives a 900mm work height
  • Level with adjustable legs, then fit a plinth
  • Fix to the floor with brackets if it will take a stone top

03The worktop

Stone must be templated and installed by the fabricator once the base is fixed and level. Timber or laminate tops you can fit yourself — seal all cut edges, especially around any sink cut-out.

The takeaway

Build the base yourself, and let a fabricator template the top. That split is where DIY and professional work meet cleanly.
