Kitchen Island Ideas for South African Homes
Size, layout, materials, and must-have features for the perfect kitchen island

An island is the most requested feature in a kitchen renovation and the one most often specified badly. Clearance, services, and seating overhang decide whether it works.
01Get the dimensions right first
You need a minimum of 900mm of walkway around an island, and 1100mm on the side where the dishwasher or oven door opens. Below roughly 3m² of free floor space, an island will crowd the room — a peninsula is the better answer.
- Island minimum footprint: 1200mm × 900mm
- Seating overhang: 300mm for comfortable knee room
- Allow 600mm of width per seated person
02Services and ventilation
Putting the hob in the island means extraction — either a ceiling-mounted extractor or a downdraft unit, both of which need planning before the slab is poured or the ceiling closed. A sink in the island means plumbing in the floor.
The simplest, cheapest and often best island is a pure prep and social surface with storage below.
03Material contrast
Islands are the natural place to break from the perimeter finish: a walnut or deep green island against pale perimeter cabinetry gives the room a focal point without repainting the whole kitchen.
The takeaway
Measure the clearances before you draw the island. A slightly smaller island with generous walkways always beats a large one you have to squeeze past.
