Home Office Built-In Shelving & Desk Design: The South African Guide
Custom study cabinetry that increases productivity, storage, and property value

Hybrid work made the study a permanent room again. Built-in cabinetry turns a spare bedroom into a genuine workspace without filling it with mismatched furniture.
01Desk ergonomics
A fixed desk should sit at 720–750mm high with at least 600mm depth for a monitor at arm's length. If two people will share the room, plan an L-shape rather than facing desks — it avoids screen glare and awkward eye contact on calls.
02Shelving that does not sag
Books are heavy. A 32mm shelf can span about 900mm loaded; a 16mm shelf needs support every 600mm. Get this wrong and the bow appears within a year.
03Cables, printers and load-shedding kit
Plan a ventilated cupboard for the inverter, router and UPS, with a cable route to the desk. Concealed grommets and a rear service void keep the visible surface clear.
- Dedicated ventilated bay for inverter and battery
- Rear trunking void of at least 80mm
- Under-desk drawer for peripherals
- Integrated LED at 4000K for task light on video calls
The takeaway
Design the study around load, cables and light. Those three details separate a working office from a decorated one.
