Bathroom Vanity Design Ideas for South African Homes

Floating vanities, double basins, stone tops — what works, what to avoid, and how to budget

Bathroom cabinetry fails faster than kitchen cabinetry because of humidity and standing water. Specification matters more than style here.

01Substrate and sealing

Use moisture-resistant board throughout, seal every cut-out, and edge-band all six sides of each panel. A vanity built from standard chipboard will swell at the base within a few Highveld summers.

02Floating vs floor-standing

Wall-hung vanities make small bathrooms feel larger and make floor cleaning trivial, but they need proper brick or a reinforced stud wall and concealed steel brackets. Floor-standing units are more forgiving and give more storage.

03Budget guide

A 900mm custom vanity with a stone top and soft-close drawers typically runs R14 000 – R26 000 installed in Gauteng. A 1800mm double vanity with a mirror cabinet lands between R32 000 and R60 000 depending on finish.

The takeaway

Spend on the substrate and hardware, and save on the door finish. In a bathroom, what you cannot see is what fails.
